Turn a layover into a smarter stopover.
Is leaving the airport actually worth it? Compare time, transfers, entry requirements, budget and missed-flight risk—then build a practical plan.
How to use your Co-Pilot
Choose your airport, local arrival and departure times, ticket arrangement and entry status.
Adjust immigration, round-trip city transport, airport return buffer and estimated USD expenses.
Get a time budget, departure-from-city deadline, practical recommendation and links to next steps.
Is your layover worth turning into a stopover?
Start with your actual flight times in the connection airport’s local timezone. Estimates are editable; the tool does not fetch live immigration queues, traffic, flights or visa decisions.

What would you gain by leaving?
Complete the planner to see usable city time, timing safeguards, estimated costs and whether extending your connection is worth considering.
Three ways to use a connection
The difference isn’t just duration. It’s entry permission, transport time, baggage handling, ticket protection and what the extra hours actually allow you to do.
Stay airside
Best when entry isn’t confirmed, you have a short connection, or transfers would consume the day. Rest, eat, shower or explore airport amenities.
City micro-adventure
Best when entry is confirmed and your calculated city time still leaves a comfortable return buffer. Pick one neighborhood, not five attractions.
Book a real stopover
Consider an additional night or several days if your current window is too tight. Confirm fare differences, rebooking terms, visa and hotel eligibility before changing flights.
Go from decision to booking
Only use the services relevant to your plan. Airport, airline and government terms take precedence over general advice.
Stopover programs worth checking
These are published airline/provider program examples—not automatic eligibility. Check the current offer for your exact airline, ticket and nationality.
| Hub / program | Published baseline | What to verify before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Doha · Discover Qatar | Selected stopover packages for qualifying longer transits, commonly 12–96 hours | Offer and eligibility ↗ · visa, airline/ticket conditions, hotel availability |
| Istanbul · Turkish Airlines | Program advertises selected international transits of 20 hours to 7 days | Current rules ↗ · application lead time, routes and hotel voucher |
| Iceland · Icelandair | Many transatlantic fares allow a stopover of up to 7 nights; hotels are separate | Current rules ↗ · fare eligibility and flight availability |
Program conditions can change. No hotel, tour, flight extension or visa approval is promised by this tool. All budget entries and outputs use USD.
What the planner calculates
| Variable | How it affects the recommendation |
|---|---|
| Total connection window | Time between the local airport arrival and onward departure, including a potential date change |
| Arrival & return overhead | Immigration, airport exit, both city transfers, preflight arrival buffer and an extra cushion |
| Usable city time | Total connection minus all of the above; never assumes all layover hours are sightseeing hours |
| Entry permission / ticket protection | Safety gates: unknown or denied permission blocks an unconditional city recommendation; separate tickets add caution |
| Estimated spending | Transport, food/activity and optional hotel estimate compared with the traveler’s USD budget |
The planner does not calculate visa eligibility, live airport minimum connection times, local transport schedules, real-time traffic or flight prices. Its numeric results are estimates, not guarantees.
Common questions
Is an 8-hour layover enough to see the city?
Sometimes. Eight hours is not eight hours of sightseeing: subtract immigration, two transfers, airport re-entry and delays. Whether the remainder is useful depends on the airport, passport, ticket and time of day.
Can I convert a booked connection into an overnight stopover?
Possibly, but only if the airline and fare permit a change or reissue. Ask about added fare, change fees, bags, overnight accommodation, entry rules and whether protected connections remain on one booking. This tool cannot change your ticket.
What if I don’t know my visa status?
Do not rely on the calculator to decide immigration eligibility. Check official destination-government information and the airline or transit-document checker before planning to clear immigration.
What if my flights are on separate tickets?
A missed onward flight can be more costly because protection is often weaker. Build in time for baggage collection, recheck and new security screening; consider staying airside or arranging a longer connection.
