Know your insurance emergency line — not the app, not the website, but the 24-hour international collect call number printed on your policy card. In a flooding or evacuation scenario, apps require internet that may not be available. Have the number written down on paper.
For flooding and landslide situations: Do not attempt to drive through flooded roads regardless of how shallow they look. Flash floods in mountainous regions can develop in minutes. Never enter a slot canyon during rain or when rain is forecast upstream.
For wildfire smoke: Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) at iqair.com before outdoor activities. AQI above 100 is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups; above 150 is Unhealthy for all. N95 masks (not surgical masks) filter particulate matter — carry them in El Niño wildfire regions.
