How This Layover Calculator Works

The layover calculator subtracts your round-trip airport transit and a safety buffer from your total connection time to show your real free time, then layers two more checks on top: risk factors and visa status. The output is a complete go or no-go decision, not just a number.

The core formula is deliberately conservative. Free time equals total layover, minus transit both ways, minus your chosen buffer. The buffer covers the parts nobody plans for: the immigration queue that takes 40 minutes instead of 10, the train that leaves as you reach the platform, the security line at re-entry. Ten years of layover reports point to the same conclusion, which is that travellers who miss onward flights almost never misjudge the city. They misjudge the airport.

The visa quick check covers the most common passport and destination combinations and was last verified in July 2026. Entry rules change with little notice, so every result links to the relevant official source, and anything outside the covered combinations routes you to a live requirements check before you commit to leaving the terminal.

Layover Calculator FAQ

How much layover time do I need to leave the airport?
As a working rule, you need at least 5 to 6 hours total before leaving the airport makes sense, which typically yields around 2 hours of genuine free time after transit and buffer. Under 4 hours, stay inside. Run your exact numbers in Step 1 above, because transit time varies enormously: Zurich is 10 minutes from the city, JFK can be 90.
Is a 2 hour layover enough to leave the airport?
No. A 2 hour layover leaves negative free time at almost every major airport once you subtract transit both ways and a minimum buffer. Two hours is a connection, not a layover. Use it to find your next gate, eat, and charge your devices.
Do I need a visa to leave the airport during a layover?
Often, yes. Leaving the airport means formally entering the country, so normal entry rules apply: visa-free access, an electronic authorisation like ESTA or the UK ETA, or a full visa depending on your passport. Some countries also require a transit visa even if you stay airside. Check your combination in Step 3, then verify with the official source it links to.
What happens to my checked luggage during a layover?
On a single ticket, bags are usually checked through to your final destination and you do not touch them. On separate tickets, or when entering countries like the US and Canada that require bag collection at first entry, you must collect and re-check, which adds 30 to 60 minutes minimum. If you are unsure, ask at check-in and treat re-checking as a risk factor in Step 2.
What is the difference between a layover and a minimum connection time?
Minimum connection time (MCT) is the shortest legal gap an airline will sell between two flights at a given airport. A layover is however long your actual gap is. Booking at the MCT means any delay risks the connection. This calculator assumes your connection itself is safe and works out what to do with the surplus. If the connection is the worry, start with the Connection Time Calculator.
What should I do on an overnight layover?
For 8+ hours overnight, a day-use or transit hotel usually beats terminal seating: you board rested rather than wrecked. Several hubs have in-terminal options, such as Changi’s transit hotels and sleep pods at Dubai and Frankfurt. For anything longer, an airport hotel booked through Agoda or Booking.com is nearly always worth it.
How early should I be back at the airport before my onward flight?
Ninety minutes before departure is the sensible default for an onward international flight when you already hold a boarding pass and carry-on only. Add time for checked bags, big or unfamiliar airports, peak periods, or any airport where you must re-clear security and immigration.
Does this calculator store my details?
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you enter is saved or sent anywhere. The email option simply opens a pre-written message in your own mail app so you can send the plan to yourself.
