Four Istanbul Layover Hacks
Take a ferry, not a taxi, across the Bosphorus
A public ferry between the European and Asian sides costs a few lira and gives you a better skyline view than any paid cruise — use your Istanbulkart.
One card for everything
An Istanbulkart works on the metro, buses, ferries and trams. Buy one at the airport station rather than fumbling for single tickets all day.
Learn one phrase
“Hayır, teşekkür ederim” (no, thank you) — said with a smile while you keep walking — ends almost every street approach before it becomes a pitch.
Confirm your airport code
Istanbul has two airports — IST (European side, most international flights) and Sabiha Gökçen/SAW (Asian side). Getting between them takes over an hour, so check your ticket twice.
