The fastest condition to improve — and one of the easiest to get wrong.Rehydration after a long flight is not as simple as drinking more water. Cells use electrolytes — sodium, potassium, magnesium — to actually absorb and retain fluid. The venous system uses one-way valves and the pumping action of leg muscles to return blood to the heart — when you’re sitting completely still, that pump stops working properly.
The visible result is swollen ankles. The less visible result is metabolic waste sitting in muscle tissue longer than normal, contributing to that leaden, aching feeling in the legs that can persist well into the next day. A 15-minute walk in the terminal will do more to address this than any recovery supplement.
